jun 28-30 | not everything you are | director's statement
Apprentice and director of NOT EVERYTHING YOU ARE, Kimberley Dawn, on her inspiration to tackle a collective creation for her final project at PT.
I have always been a lover of words; words tell stories, with them we can communicate a heartbeat-moment. My words are likely to take the form of a poem, a blog, a rant or an exaggerated anecdote, and sometimes they take to the stage.
My current role in life is Directing Apprentice at Pacific Theatre. It’s a job that teaches a lot about theatre from the inside, all the while allowing me opportunities to do artistic projects of one sort or another.
This current show Not Everything You Are came to me, like the re-birth of the phoenix, out of the ashes of another show. I am so genuinely excited to take the joy-lifeblood that I had poured into the first project, and pour it unabashedly into this new one. The morning after I buried my first show, I saw this video and for the first time in almost a month, I believed it, there was “joy not far from here”. And that is how this show, my little squalling phoenix, was born.
I wanted to make a show about the journey we’re all on, the way we’re always between things, the ways in which we strive, fail, try again and what makes us want to even bother. Our first brainstorming session as an ensemble was astonishingly coherent: the strong pattern that emerged from our seven minds was this. We were interested in the moments and space between life’s many paradoxes.
Over the next few weeks our team will be writing, editing, piecing and pinning this show together and have no fear, I will definitely keep you in the loop!

july 17-21 | armed
Here it is - another project by your favourite PT Communications Manager. I co-wrote and produced ARMED last summer as a part of the Walking Fish Festival's commissioned works, and now a full-fledged one act production is on the way!
ARMED by Dani Bryant and Andrea Loewen
“You won’t be calling me inadequate when I have a giant cannon on my arm.”
What makes a man? Is it a job? A relationship? Or maybe it's a couple of small but vital bits of anatomy. When Joe loses everything that made him a Real Man, there is only one thing left to do: compensate. Thus begins his epic quest to find something - anything - that will give him undeniable strength and power. The time-honoured tradition of a luxury car won't do the trick, so what will?
Playing July 18-21 at Pacific Theatre
Tickets $10 in advance, $12 at door
Pay-what-you-can preview July 17th

wolf at the door | playwright's notes
Notes from playwright Tina Teeninga on WOLF AT THE DOOR. We're finally producing a staged reading of this play after years of working with Tina to develop the script! June 22 & 23 at 8pm, tickets are pay-what-you-can at the door for this one.
I love wildflower gardens. There is something inviting about a plot of land given the freedom to grow at will, and something refreshing about its imperfection and wildness. It may lack the mathematical precision of a classical Italian garden or the trim tidiness of a traditional French garden, but there is something about a wildflower garden that encourages dreaming, inspired thinking, and even reflection.
The play began as a seed when my high school teacher taught us about the Luddites. I was fascinated by their gutsy reaction to the cultural changes of their time. As an apprentice years ago, pondering potential plots for my first full length play, the story of the Luddites suddenly - and I mean, suddenly - came back to me, like banging my head on a low hanging chandelier at a new friend’s house. (Thanks, God.) The script found its plot of land at the Rosedale on Robson Playwriting Conference, and from then on has been warmly supported, encouraged and developed, most persistently, by Ron Reed. Kathy Parsons, as my long-term dramaturge, has offered plenty of ideas, creativity and sharp thinking. Throughout the years, many talented, generous actors lent their spirited intelligence to give voice to the script’s characters in private table readings. The play is richer because of these people. And possibly more wild.
And so we come to this workshop production, staged reading of ‘Wolf at the Door’. Not every flower may be in full bloom, some grasses may need more water, and there may be some weeds to pull out. But feel free to lay down amongst the tall grasses and imagine what could be, dream a little, think, and even kick a soccer ball around.

pt kids | meet camp leader kaitlin!
Registration for the first ever PT KiDS Summer Theatre School is gearing up! As we count down to July 9th and the arrival of the kids, we thought we'd let you know a little bit more about staff member Kaitlin Williams who will be teaching the course.
Kaitlin is a local Vancouver actor and the PT staff member in charge of community outreach. She received her BFA in acting from UVic in 2009, and has ever since been connected with Pacific Theatre either as an apprentice, actor or as a member of the staff. She also has a long history of teaching kids, and is very excited to take on PT's first ever kids camp. Here are some highlights of past kids camps she's taught:
She loves seeing kids discover the joy of theatre and performance for the first time. She knows the week at the PT camp will be a blast and can't wait to connect with PT's younger community.
After teaching a kids drama club in 2010, one parent said “...Aidan had a really good time. This is nice to see with him. He is usually very shy and quiet and doesn't talk to new people, but anytime he has a chance to be on stage or in a production, he just really opens up. I was very happy to see him talking to Kaitlin tonight after the practice. It says a lot about her!”
More info about the camp and registration can be found here. Scholarships are also available! Questions? Email Kaitlin today at Kaitlin@pacifictheatre.org.

june 15-sept 1 | joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat | chemainus theatre
Our friends at Chemainus Theatre are bringing JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT to the stage. Press release below.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat paints the Chemainus Theatre Festival in musical-theatre gold!
Vancouver Island theatregoers will vividly remember the summer of 2012. From June 15 to September 1, The Chemainus Theatre Festival presents the famous Broadway musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat. Written by award-winning duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar), the charming biblical tale of Jacob (patriarch of Israel) and his favourite of twelve sons, Joseph, hits the stage with rock-opera sensation – and not a word of spoken script.
Joseph's prophetic story unfolds in an impressive line-up of twenty-five musical scores. Webber and Rice whirl audiences through his life of slavery, dream-inspired rise to power, and freeing rediscovery of love and family by way of 60s-era rock 'n' roll, 20s-era Charleston, French ballads, Caribbean calypso, and dance-club disco.
“We want to leave every audience member humming long after the applause ends,” says Musical Director, Brad L’Écuyer. Along with Choreographer Shane Snow, and Sound Designer Robin Boxwell, the trio intend to deliver every note - from "Close Every Door" to "Any Dream Will Do" and "Poor, Poor Joseph” - in perfect pitch, and with a punch.
The Chemainus Theatre Festival Artistic Director, Mark DuMez, is excited for Vancouver Island audiences to experience the upbeat music, entertaining story, and rich visuals of Joseph. “The dramatic yet inviting storyline combined with catchy and well-loved songs make this big summer production a wonderful treat,” says DuMez. “It’s a powerful and moving story told in vibrant and fun loving fashion –there is somethingfor everyone to enjoy in this wildly popular piece!”
Playing June 15-Sept 1
Tickets available online here or at 1-800-565-7738

The Chemainus Theatre Festival Artistic Director, Mark DuMez, is excited for Vancouver Island audiences to experience the upbeat music, entertaining story, and rich visuals of Joseph. “The dramatic yet inviting storyline combined with catchy and well-loved songs make this big summer production a wonderful treat,” says DuMez. “It’s a powerful and moving story told in vibrant and fun loving fashion –there is somethingfor everyone to enjoy in this wildly popular piece!”
