the cake | responses

"The icing on this particular cake is Erla Faye Forsyth. [...] Directed by Angela Konrad, the balance never falters. Humour keeps this cake light but real.”
- Jo Ledingham

“Stephanie Elgersma turns in a stellar performance. [...] Director Angela Konrad just manages to keep the humour on even keel with the play’s more serious counterpoints without ever resorting to moralizing.”
-John Jane, reviewvancouver

"All four actors felt consistently sincere and vulnerable through moments of extreme emotion and in silly quirks. [...] Indulge in Cake! You’ll be glad that you did."
-Blake Hepburn, Two Cents & Two Pence

"I’m so grateful for the tenderness of THE CAKE— not to mention its wit. [...] Playing Della, actor Erla Faye Forsyth gives a downright miraculous performance [and] as Jen, Stephanie Elgersma matches Forsyth step for step."
-Colin Thomas

"Director Angela Konrad’s light approach ensures a balanced approach to each character. [...] THE CAKE is a powerful and hilarious exploration of how our beliefs are shaped and how we can alter our values when it comes to the ones we love."
-Katie Gartlan-Close, Vancouver Presents

the cake | meet the crew

It's tech week! A perfect time to introduce the hardworking team bringing the world of THE CAKE to life. We couldn't be prouder of this artistic and production team. Read on to find out what they've been working on and thinking about!

Angela Konrad - Director

Angela's love language is food, and the cast, crew, and administrative staff have all benefited from the delicious cookies, cakes, and cupcakes she's been bringing in.

Michael Hewitt - Lighting Designer

Michael is "looking very much forward to my first project at Pacific Theatre and to be working with Lauchlin again. I think this piece of cake is very relevant to today societies and what is felt from both ends of the spectrum with regard to identity and presentation."

Rick Colhoun - Sound Designer

For THE CAKE, Rick worked with actor Tariq Leslie to evoke a certain British baking competition host. He also composed original music fit for the finest reality TV show!

Props Master - Ariel Slack

"I love helping to build the world of a show. I'm especially looking forward to the challenge this script presents of making mouthwatering cakes that can withstand all the trials of onstage life. It's such a treat to work with this team as well, and I'm excited for that."

Alexandria Bay - Assistant Stage Manager

"I'm excited to tell a story that deserves to be told."

Lauchlin Johnston - Set Designer

THE CAKE is one of the more intricate set designs Lauchlin's brought to the PT stage. Keep your eyes open and you might see a few surprises along the way!

Kaitlin Williams - Costume Designer

Julia Lank - Stage Manager

"The Cake directly tackles the question that has been consuming most of my mental energy this year: how generous should we be with people who hold views we fundamentally don't understand? What about views we think are harmful? And can we expect empathy to be met with empathy?"

the cake | meet the cast

As we begin to wrap up our last full week of rehearsal, we thought we'd take this opportunity to introduce you to the wonderful cast of THE CAKE! Read on to find out a bit about why these actors are excited to tackle this project.
Erla Faye Forsyth (Della) told us that "THE CAKE has challenged me to really delve into the source of my belief system and to ask myself some difficult questions about how I express my spirituality."
Tim Dixon (Tim) shared: "I'm excited about the script and story, written by a woman whose work I admire in THIS IS US. I'm excited about the challenge, to bring these characters to life and be true to their stories. I'm excited to be working yet again with Erla Faye Forsyth, a good friend and amazing actor. And I'm excited to be here, or as George Burns once said, 'Nice to be here? At my age it's nice to be anywhere.'"
Cecilly Day (Macy) is ecstatic to be making her Pacific Theatre debut in The Cake as Macy. From the moment she read this hard hitting, heart warming script she knew she had to be a part of this cast.
Cecilly shared that "While I love performing in musicals, I am so excited to dive into a straight play and challenge myself as an actor."
Stephanie Elgersma (Jen) says, "I'm excited to eat cake for work! But in a more serious response - I'm so happy to be working with Pacific Theatre again. It's been eight years (almost to the day!) since I was last in a Pacific Theatre mainstage show and it feels a little like coming home!"
