The Gift Everyone Wants to Unwrap is Coming to The Chemainus Theatre Festival

CThe Christmas of 2012 will be undeniably merry when The Chemainus Theatre Festival opens The Gifts of the Magi, November 30 to December 30, 2012. Based on a timeless love story by O. Henry, the Mark St. Germain musical is known to be “crisp and entertaining" (NY Daily News), and is renowned for bringing “a laugh to the throat and a misty tear to the eye of theatregoers, young or old" (NY Tribune). With festive songs and dancing, and an amusing (yet thoughtful) story line, The Gifts of the Magi calls forth the “true” spirit of Christmas.

A story both familiar and fresh, The Gifts of the Magi is a 1920's-era retelling of the Biblical tale of the Magi (wise men who bestowed gifts of great meaning on the new-born King). Set in cold and unfriendly New York City, the musical centres upon the struggles of down-on-their-luck couple Jim and Della Young. Despite eking out a frugal life in their modest apartment, the husband and wife both secretly wish to prove their love by giving the perfect Christmas gift. Unfortunately, their passion comes at a price they do not have the means to afford.

With no more than one dollar and eighty-seven cents between them, both Jim and Della must decide whether to part with their own most precious possession in order to acquire their holiday surprise. Christmas Eve brings complications to a head when the couple finally exchange their thoughtful - yet useless – presents and ultimately unwrap a gift much more precious.

For theatregoers who are looking to kindle their holiday spirit, The Gifts of the Magi provides humour, heart and the gift everyone wants… to unwrap the true meaning of Christmas.

Tickets are available for evening (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday - 7:30 p.m., Friday, Saturday - 8:00 p.m.) and matinee (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday - 2:00 p.m.) performances from November 30th to December 30th.
