dec 10 | breaking borders | mariam barry

One of last season's apprentices, Mariam Barry (THE CHRISTIANS), is producing and co-hosting BREAKING BORDERS: IMMIGRANTS TAKE THE MIC! More info below.

BREAKING BORDERS
Dec 10 at 7pm at Cottage Bistro
Entry By Donation
Event Info Here

Breaking Borders is a story driven performance event where immigrants take the mic!

Newcomers to Canada, working professionally as artists, will step to the stage to showcase their talents and share stories.

A night of rap, music, storytelling, and slam poetry, Breaking Borders is a celebration of our fearless visa holders, immigrants, and refugee theatre artists.

Co-hosted by Mariam Barry and Alexandra Lainfiesta, this gathering comes on the heels of an exciting new initiative - a brand new trust account created to support young theatre artists in our community who are immigrating to Canada.

Both Alexandra Lainfiesta and Mariam Barry have walked through this experience alone, and know intimately how immigration can be a very isolating, arduous and expensive process for young newcomers. The trust account they are creating will therefore provide financial support to any young theatre artists seeking help with covering their lawyer consultation fees, PR application fees, and language exams.

With this Alexandra Lainfiesta and Mariam Barry will foster a new network of support and guidance, connecting those who have walked through the process with the ones about to start on that road.

Performers include Isidro Isi, Ghazal Azarbad, Tunji Taylor-Lewis, Kurai Mubaiwa, Yoro Noukoussi, Jacky Essombé, a surprise rapper from Rwanda and more!

suitcase stories | opening night

Today, we are wishing Happy Opening to Pacific Theatre artist and former apprentice Maki Yi as her one-woman show SUITCASE STORIES opens at the Evergreen Cultural Centre! The show found its wings in our lobby (and stage) and we are thrilled to see it fly away to the Tri-Cities.

With only her tiny suitcase in tow, Maki leaves her home in South Korea and takes off for Canada, simply because her brother had a map of Toronto. A cross-country tale of survival and self-discovery, this wonderful one-woman show is filled with all the winsome vulnerability and plucky humour of the originals.

july 12-15 | still the kettle sings

Our friends at Plan Z Theatre present, THE KETTLE SINGS, running on the PT stage from July 12th-15th! Come support the all female dream team in this brand new devised piece created and performed by many PT artists.

You’re sitting in your Mom’s kitchen, listening to her casually tell you over a cup of tea about something jaw dropping she once did. You are floored - you almost don’t believe her. You're still reeling from the first when you suddenly realise there could be more...

“Mom, tell me another story,”

In her words you are suddenly whisked away into a world that is somehow recognisable and somehow a dream, the lightness of childhood and the gravity of age juxtaposed. She transforms the ordinary to the extraordinary within each sentence. Then it hits you, you realise she herself is the adventure and her life the magnificent tapestry she weaves with her stories.

This is a brand new Canadian play devised from actual interviews with these extraordinary ordinary women. Featuring childbirth, corn chips, verbatim text, joy, fear, original music, and a whole lot of perseverance. Devised theatre at its finest and boldest.

Direction • Eleanor Felton
Assistant Direction • Shelby Bushell
Set Design • Sarah Mabberley
Lighting Design • Sophie Yufei Tang
Stage Management • Linnea Antos

It runs July 12-15 at 8pm, no matinees
General Seating

"Storytelling is vital to the human experience! Stories allow us to see into another person's reality, entertain what it might be like to be in their shoes. I would venture to say that without stories, the world would be incredibly devoid of compassion and empathy. Story telling helps us understand where we may have come from, who we are, and who we aren't. It gives us the opportunity to consider how we may improve society/the world by inviting others in."| Jenna Grubaugh | Actor

"I think [the storytelling] comes in two parts, the sense that someone wants to listen, and the bravery to share. This show will provide a space for both: We will ask for stories, and we will become the voice to share it widely. I also hope it will inspire daughters and sons to actively ask their Mom or Grandma about their lives." | Eleanor Felton | Director

apr. 26-29 | the shape of a girl

Next up from Stone's Throw Productions is THE SHAPE OF A GIRL by Joan MacLeod.

Gripping, eye-opening and heart-wrenching. Stone’s Throw Productions ignites a thought-provoking exploration on bullying and violence between young girls. In this one-woman show, fifteen-year-old Braidie recounts the bullying she has seen within her own friend group from childhood through to adolescence. She is a bystander who reacts as many people do – looks down and says nothing. Based on the tragic Reena Virk murder, The Shape of a Girl by Joan MacLeod is an important reminder of the scary progression of bullying, the long-lasting damages it can cause, and how doing nothing contributes to the circle of violence.

Audience Advisory: Contains some strong language and references to violence.

jan. 18 - 28 | the nether

Our friends at Redcurrant Collective opened THE NETHER last night at Firehall Arts Centre. Former apprentice, Julia Siedlanowska is featured in the show and associated artist, Chris Lam (director of SPRING AWAKENING on the PT stage March 8-11), directed it!

The Nether made its Vancouver premiere at this year’s Fringe Festival and was a favourite amongst critics. A detective story that explores the nature of virtual realms, fantasy and morality. Written by Jennifer Haley, The Nether is complex and darkly intriguing.

The play is set in the near future. The internet has evolved into the Nether, a vast network of virtual reality realms. Users may log in, choose an identity and indulge any desire. When Detective Morris investigates a realm called The Hideaway where pedophiles may live out their fantasies involving children, she brings its creator in for interrogation. They discover they have made emotional attachments in this realm that blind them to the greater questions of ethical behaviour, both in the imagination and the outside world.
