your pt-friendly guide to the jessies

The Jessies are just a week away and we are so excited to celebrate with all of you. To kick off the count down to the Jessies, here is a PT-Friendly guide to all our artists who have been nominated for their outstanding work around the community.

Andrew McNee was last seen on our stage in THE SEAFARER, and has been nominated for his work in the Arts Club's ONEGIN and Bard on the Beach's THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. You watched Lori Triolo on our stage in DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA, and she's been nominated for her performance in THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT. Kevin McNulty was seen a few years back on the PT stage in THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT, and has been nominated for his performance in YOU WILL REMEMBER ME. Stephen Drover, worked on our 2012-2013 production of WITTENBERG and has been nominated for his work in COCK.

Corina Akeson most recent work at PT was for her design in WIT. She was also the assistant director for THE WHIPPING MAN, and is nominated for her performance in A DOLL'S HOUSE. Another familiar face to THE WHIPPING MAN production is Drew Facey, who has been nominated for his set design in ONEGIN.

Many artists who worked on our production of WIT have also been nominated for their outstanding work in other productions. Julie Casselman, who made her professional debut as Nurse Susie was nominated for her sound design on TENDER NAPALM.  Christopher Gauthier is nominated for his costume design in BRIGHT BLUE FUTURE. John Webber is no stranger around PT. He recently was the head set designer for WIT and has been nominated for his outstanding lighting design in ONEGIN at the Arts Club. Lauchlin Johnston is well known around PT for his outstanding lighting and set design work. This year he has been nominated for his work in GOOD PEOPLE and PETER AND THE STARCATCHER.

Carolyn Rapanos worked on the production of GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES and is nominated for her work in RIVULETS: 3 SHORT PLAYS ABOUT A FLOOD. Itai Erdal previously worked on JESUS HOPPED THE A TRAIN, and was nominated for her work in THE VALLEY. Wendy Gorling was the movement coach and choreographer for our actress in THE AMISH PROJECT, and is nominated for her work in THE WAITING ROOM. Pam Johnson worked with us on COMMUNION, and is nominated for her work in THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. Last but certainly not least, Benjamin Elliot was seen a few years back in our production of CHRISTMAS ON THE AIR and is nominated for his design work in A BEST LAID PLANS and LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST.

There you have it folks! Let's give a round of applause for the nominees! We can't wait to see everyone at the awards next Monday.

jessie awards | set design

Last Monday were the 33rd annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards!  We always love this opportunity to gather with the rest of the community and celebrate the season's incredible work.  This year was no different!  We were also thrilled for long-time PT designer Lauchlin Johnston - he has often been nominated for his work, and this year he took home the Jessie for his lighting design on THE WHIPPING MAN!  Congratulations Lauchlin, and everyone else for your honours.  What a party!

your pt-friendly guide to the jessies

We already shared our excitement with you over our Jessie nominations from the past season, but what about all our artists who got nominations elsewhere?  We are so proud of all our artists and the work they produce, so as usual, here is your PT-Friendly Guide to the Jessies!

Andrew McNee was last on our stage in THE SEAFARER, and has been nominated for his work in The Arts Club's ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS.  Katharine Venour is not only a staple of our stage, but is Artist Advisor to our board!  You may have seen her at PT in MEASURE FOR MEASURE, and she has now been nominated for LATE COMPANY alongside Kerry Sandomirsky who performed in COMMUNION on our stage last year.  Also from COMMUNION was Diane Brown who has been nominated for her role in this year's THE DUCHESS AKA WALLACE SIMPSON.

John Webber has designed for several shows at PT, most recently THE RAINMAKER.  His nominations come in for SAINT JOAN and ICELAND.  Drew Facey, nominated for his work with us in THE RAINMAKER, is also nominated for A TOI, POUR TOUJOURS, TA MARIE-LOU, BLASTED, and INDIAN ARM.  Steven Greenfield and Brett Ziegler have played in past musicals at PT and were nominated as part of the ensemble for RED ROCK DINER.

You saw Craig Erickson in LEAVE OF ABSENCE on our stage a few years back, and his nomination came in for his role in SPEED THE PLOW.  Kayvon Kelly (MOTHER TERESA IS DEAD) and Michael Kopsa (THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT) were also both nominated for their acting in MY RABBI and BLASTED respectively.

THE RAINMAKER's Curry Family patriarch, Andrew Wheeler, is nominated for THE COMPETITION IS FIERCE, and Peter Carlone, who won the Jessie for his role in THE FOREIGNER is nominated alongside Wheeler for HUNTER GATHERERS.  Also from HUNTER GATHERERS is Carolyn Rapanos, who designed our set for FREUD'S LAST SESSION.

Lauchlin Johnston is nominated for his design in THE WHIPPING MAN here at PT, but he also got a nod for his work in STATIONARY: A RECESSION-ERA MUSICAL.  Meanwhile, Amy McDougall, who was nominated for her costume design in THE WHIPPING MAN as well, is up for an award for THE GLASS MENAGERIE and James Coomber, who has composed many shows for us and played accordion at Celebrazione, has a nomination for his sound design for INDIAN ARM.

A few members from the nominated ensemble of OUR TOWN have spent time with us: Bob Frazer, Dawn Petten, and another nomination for Craig Erickson.  Director Richard Wolf (THE MEAL) is up for BLASTED.

Whew!  That's a lot of nominations for us to get excited about!  We can't wait to visit everyone at the awards on June 22nd.

pt at the jessies | 2014

What a great night!  We always love joining with our friends and colleagues to celebrate the year of theatre in Vancouver, and last night was no exception.  We were thrilled to see John Voth, Peter Carlone, and Erla Faye Forsyth recognized for their roles in THE FOREIGNER, as well as the team of THE SEAFARER take the prize for Outstanding Production!  Here's some shots from the night.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.  In other friends-of-PT news, we were thrilled to see our friends at Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre win the Critic's Choice Innovation Award for their production of THIS STAYS IN THE ROOM, Itsazoo and Chelsea Haberlin (currently directing our apprentices Pippa and Kenton in GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES) took Outstanding Production for Small Theatre with KILLER JOE.  Frequent PT director Richard Wolfe received the John Moffat & Larry Lillo Award as well as Outstanding Direction for INSIDE THE SEED (featuring our friend Carl Kennedy).  Emmelia Gordon, who played in MEASURE FOR MEASURE won for her role in DISSOLVE.  Plus Drew Facey, nominated for THE SEAFARER, won for his designs for ART, PENELOPE, and body of work in Theatre for Young Audiences.

pt at the jessies | 2014 nominations

We had an amazing time at the Jessies nominations party yesterday!  As announcer Dawn Petten put it - in some ways the nominations party is the best part of the Jessies, since it's just about celebrating everyone.  And we have a lot to celebrate!  PT got 14 nominations this year for THE SEAFARER and  THE FOREIGNER, plus a lot of our "PT artists" were honoured for other work.  Here's the rundown.

All the 2013-14 nominees. Photo by Lois Dawson.
THE FOREIGNER:

John Voth - Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role
Peter Carlone - Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role
Erla Faye Forsyth - Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role
Lauchlin Johnston - Outstanding Set Design
Evan Frayne - Outstanding Direction
Outstanding Production

THE SEAFARER:

Ron Reed - Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role
John Emmet Tracy - Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role
Tim Dixon - Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role
Drew Facey - Outstanding Set Design
Sydney Cavanagh - Outstanding Costume Design
Luke Ertman - Outstanding Sound Design
Anthony F. Ingram - Outstanding Direction
Outstanding Production

OTHER PT ARTISTS:

Christopher David Gauthier was nominated for his body of work, which includes costumes for MEASURE FOR MEASURE.  Also from MEASURE FOR MEASURE, Emmelia Gordon and Julie McIsaac got acting nominations.  John Webber designed set and lights for COMMUNION on our stage, and was nominated for his work on ART and EXCEPT IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF WAR (written by PT artist Sean Devine).  Last time Gordon Roberts was on our stage was in THE SPITFIRE GRILL, and now he was nominated as a part of the orchestra for FLOYD COLLINS.  Horeshoes & Hand Grenade's Mindy Parfitt was nominated for the direction of ARMSTRONG'S WA.  More PT actors got nominations: you've seen Bob Frazer (THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT), Kayvon Kelly (MOTHER TERESA IS DEAD), and Sebastian Kroon (MOTHER TERESA IS DEAD) on our stage, and they were all nominated for their work.  Chelsea Haberlin will direct our apprentices next month and she was nominated for KILLER JOE, Richard Wolfe has directed at PT a number of times, most recently bringing THE MEAL to our stage, and he also got a nod.  Steven Greenfield was a part of the SPITFIRE GRILL gang, as was Caitriona Murphy, and they both got nominations as well - Steven for musical direction and Caitriona for her acting.   Then of course, there's the 7 other nominations that Drew Facey received, including one for Outstanding Body of Work, and Lauchlin Johnston's other set design nomination for KILLER JOE.

And that's just the surface!  There are a huge number of nominated artists in Vancouver this year and so many more that may not have received a nomination, but were truly excellent.  Congratulations to EVERYONE who made theatre happen in Vancouver this year!
