In this new series on canvas and mylar, Shari-Anne Gibson re-invents the traditional landscape by creating interrupted and dislocated scenes. Historically, the natural world is praised for offering the viewer rest and fullness, a respite from the frenetic activity of daily life. And yet, today, our experience of landscape is constantly interrupted: by power lines, newly paved roads, cell phones. Being drawn in to a quiet centre is truly rare.
We cannot fully climb into these images, but are forced to consider the painted, solid surface that surrounds and invades the scenes. These inconsistencies generate meaning and challenge our experience of natural beauty.
