SONG OF SONGS
Poetry and Palestrina
8 pm Friday, January 27, 2012
Ryerson United Church
2195 West 45th Avenue (at Yew Street), Kerrisdale,Vancouver
Vancouver Chamber Choir
Jon Washburn, conductor
The biblical Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) is perhaps the most famous love poem of all time. It fascinated Palestrina and other Renaissance composers particularly because of its duality - as secular description of the Garden of Love and as sacred allegory of God's love for Israel, or Christ's love for the Church. In this concert we will present 10 of Palestrina's magnificent motets and eight more by other great composers of the late Renaissance and Early Baroque eras - Tómas Luis de Victoria, Claudio Monteverdi, Josquin des Prez, Heinrich Schütz, Costanzo Festa, Peter Philips, Orlando di Lasso
Join J. Evan Kreider, Professor Emeritus UBC School of Music, at 7:10 pm for a pre-concert talk on the evening's music.
Tickets to SONG OF SONGS are $24.50 - $28, available at Ticketmaster. Student rush tickets are $10 when doors open one hour before the concert. Visit Ticketmaster.ca to purchase online or phone 1-855-985-ARTS (2787).
