Mar 5-20 | Diary of Anne Frank | Gallery 7

Truly a soul food show - indeed, a great partner to REFUGE OF LIES, come to think of it. And look who's playing Otto Frank - our very own Glen Pinchin! Who played two generations of Kirbys in our last two spring shows, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU and YOU STILL CAN'T. And another PT regular - in the audience, if not onstage - is John Dawson, playing Mr. Van Daan. (Terrific poster, eh?)

Gallery 7 presents...
THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
March 5 & 6, 11 - 13, 18 - 20, 2010
Discount Matinees: March 6 & 13 @ 2:00 PM

The Netherlands. World War II. An Annex. This is the tragic and compelling story of a young Anne Frank and her family's attempt to flee Nazi tyranny by hiding in the confines of a secret annex above a factory. A story of courage, love and human resiliency emerges as Anne ruminates about their experience. Despite the atrocities of the war torn-chaos just beyond the walls of their hide-out, a young woman discovers hope, joy and a truth about life that more than often escapes our modern understanding.

"A lovely tender drama....Strange how the shining spirit of a young girl now dead can filter down through the years and inspire a group of theatrical professionals in a foreign land." - NEW YORK TIMES

"There is so much beauty, warm humor, gentle pity...in THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK that it is difficult to imagine how this play could be contained in one set on one stage...this is a fine drama." - NEW YORK NEWS

By the way, auditions for G7's next production, CHICKENS by Lucia Frangione, are set for March 25, 2010 at 6:30 PM in the MEI Theatre. A modern romance against all odds

PREMIERE

Local boy Day, a free spirit, lives next door to worldly Layla, a career-driven intellectual. The two have nothing in common. Or do they? Over time these divergent souls come to understand each other in a way neither thought possible. A contemporary tale of romance and cultural divides so engaging it will change the way you see the girl (or boy) next door!

Mar 2-13: Kat Gauthier in MATT AND BEN

Remember Sky from YOU STILL CAN'T? Had the big crush on Dave? Well, that lovely performance was by Kat Gauthier, who'll be playing Ben Affleck (!) in a show that opens a week from now. Not the first time she's played a guy: Kat played several characters in our gender-blind production of REMNANTS a few years back. I'm not going to miss it. Are you kidding? A movie nut like me, miss the "origin story" of Good Will Hunting?

Hello Friends,

Just a reminder that Fighting Chance Productions' Matt and Ben opens NEXT WEEK: March 4th and runs Tuesday-Saturday until the 13th. I would be overjoyed to see you all there and share in this hilarious story of the unlikely friendship between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck before they were house-hold names. Plus, when else can you see my strut my stuff at Ben Affleck?

More information at Fighting Chance Productions (including an interview with me about all sorts of things).

For those of you who lack funds (as I know a lot of us do... There are two previews March 2-3 which are $12). The show is at the Havana Theatre and you can get tickets through Tickets Tonight. If you come, make sure to stick around after so I can say HELLO! Or maybe even get a wee treat at the Havana.

Thanks a bunch guys,

Kat

Join the PT Family - Become an Apprentice

It's that time of year again! As most of you know, every season PT brings on 3-4 apprentices who go on to learn the ins and outs of running a theatre company, from box office and front-of-house to stage building and production management to administration and publicity to... well, everything. On top of it all they get the chance to get involved in PT mainstage shows and create their own projects!
Former apprentices have a few things to say about the program themselves:

"After graduating from University of Ottawa, most people thought I should have stayed in the town which I studied in to capitalize on the relationships that I had built over there. But PT held out a different opportunity for me to explore and step out in faith into a location that I didn't know, but into a passion that I loved: Directing. Very few other places allowed me an opportunity to be an apprentice to professional directors where I could interact with them on a more personal level. My favorite experiences were participating in developmental script readings, learning to get over my fear of heights and to be a part of so many delightful plays during the season (2007-2008). Some of the opportunities that came out of the apprenticeship because of the amazing relationships that were built here were: sequential yearly directing contracts with Gallery 7 and a costume designing contract with Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre and many more to come." - Joyce Chung

"The PT apprenticeship was a whirlwind of learning, experiencing, accomplishing, meeting, loving, succeding and failing. I learned so much in those months that will stay with me forever. Once you are in the PT family you are in for good. It took the skills I had learned in school and increased them, honed them and challanged them. I grew in my confidence as well as my practical experience. I would recommend it for anyone who is passionate about theatre and willing to give it everything they have." - Linsy Rotar

The official writeup on the program and application info is available here.

Feb. 24-27: BEYOND THE CHARIOTS

One benefit of the Olympic fever that's hit Vancouver? No one will ask any questions if you take an afternoon off of work! The latest addition to More Than Gold's rental of PT's stage is BEYOND THE CHARIOTS, Rich Swingle's play about Eric Liddel's post-Olympic adventures. Check out on of the 2:30pm performances this week.

The four time Academy Award winning film Chariots Of Fire tells how Eric Liddell refused to run the 100 meters in the 1924 Paris Olympics because a qualifying heat was held on a Sunday. Instead he ran the 400, a race in which he wasn't expected to place. He finished it five meters ahead of the favorite, winning the gold and breaking the world record. Rich Swingle's new one-man play, Beyond the Chariots, picks up where the film left off, showing Eric in his greatest race, as a missionary to war-torn China.

We all need a reminder of what God can do through a devoted soul, and there is no better way to draw close to that than by watching Rich Swingle perform this miraculous one-man show. It's not just the layers Rich brings out of the characters, not just his command as an actor playing multiple roles, it isn't just the fine writing -- it's that God's spirit is present from beginning to end as Rich draws us into Eric Liddell's heart. I marvel at the depth of this performance and the power in this play. As a former runner, I loved how the intensity of running was captured on a small stage. Beyond the Chariots will take you through joy, pain, and redemption with laughs along the way. What it will not do is leave you untouched.

I wanted to remind you about this little hockey show I co-wrote and directed, it's playing at PT during the Olympics. I hope you get a chance to see it, I think it's good for the soul.

Feb 19-24: Graham Ord at Railway Club, etc.

From a Soul Foodie...
Just chatting with Graham Ord on FB - the wonders of technology. He mentioned that he's going to be performing at the railway club during the Olympics. He didn't note the date but I checked his web site and it looks like his upcoming Vancouver tour is under the More Than Gold banner - I thought it might be worth a Soul Food mention.

Live Music with Hockey Dad Feb. 17-20 & 23-27

Every night before More Than Gold's presentation of HOCKEY DAD: A PLAY IN 3 PERIODS on the PT stage there will be a live musical performance including some wonderful acts you won't want to miss. The shows start at 7:30pm every night. Here's the schedule:

Feb. 17: Jacob Moon

Feb. 18: Anna Vandas (remember her from PRESENCE and CHRISTMAS PRESENCE?)
Feb. 19 & 20: Jacob Moon

Feb. 23: Greg Sczebel
Feb. 24: Andrew Smith and Norm Strauss
Feb. 25-27: Greg Sczebel

Other More Than Gold events being held at PT include THIS WAY DANCE PRODUCTION (tonight!) and RICH SWINGLE: BEYOND THE CHARIOTS Feb. 24-27 at 2:30pm.

Oh, maybe not the Greg guy. Looks like he flew the coop. I went to HOCKEY DAD last night, and heard Nelson Boschman in his place: a fine last-minute substitution, I must say, played hard, scored two short-handed goals. But if you want to hear Greg Sczebel, I think you need to fly to Toronto...

Aug 1-8: Glen Workshop | Creativity From The Margins

IMAGE Journal is the best - you oughta subscribe - and I hear their annual summer Glen Workshops are equally best. Here's the bumf, from their IMAGE Update email - to which you also ought subscribe!

Register Now for the 2010 Glen Workshop
Creativity from the Margins: Art as Witness, August 1-8, 2010

The Glen WorkshopThe Glen Workshop is an illuminating conference on the arts and religion, where participants practice and strengthen their craft and vision in community. This weeklong event, hosted at St. John s College Santa Fe, combines the best elements of a workshop, an arts festival, and a symposium. Morning workshops are small, so faculty can provide ample attention to beginners as well as those advanced in their craft. This year s theme is Creativity from the Margins: Art as Witness, which focuses on the challenges for artists of faith participating from a minority s perspective in a world often unconcerned with engaging religious issues. This year s celebrated faculty includes poets Marilyn Nelson and B.H Fairchild, fiction writer Melissa Pritchard, screenwriter Bradford Winters, painterJoel Sheesley, illustrator Barry Moser, musicians Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist of Over the Rhine, and spiritual writer Lauren Winner. Editor and author Rodney Clapp will lead a seminar exploring the week s theme in greater depth through discussion and in-class creativity, and film critic Jeffrey Overstreet will lead a film seminar (new this year!) exploring contemplative cinema. In the afternoon, lectures, readings, and presentations enrich the Glen experience, as do the nightly ecumenical worship services incorporating the arts. Free time provides recreational and artistic opportunities within the rich culture and traditions of Santa Fe, including writing, conversation, hiking and exploring the glorious Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. Please note that class sizes are limited, and several are already full: don't wait too long to register!

New Lenten Discipline: Blogs?

Just got word from Nelson Boschman that Artisan, his new Yaletown church, is doing a collective project in the 40(ish) days leading up to Easter.
"The Lent Project is a creative, collaborative participation in the Lent season by the Artisan Vancouver community. On each of the forty days of Lent, we will post something that is intended to help us remember and prepare for the story of Christ's passion and resurrection. Comments for further reflection are most welcome."
Check it out here. Lots of PT folk involved at Artisan. Nelson is a jazz pianist who anchors the band for CHRISTMAS PRESENCE and the like, who'll be creating the sound score for REFUGE OF LIES. Lance Odegard is a singer/songwriter you also tend to see at those gigs, and I think he does music at Artisan? If I'm right, Rebecca and Mike deBoer, and Frank and Karina Nickel. Weekly gatherings start March 7.

And it happens that I started doing the same sort of thing a week or so ago. I wanted to dig back into scripture, I wanted to start actor prep for GODSPELL, and then it dawned on me that Lent must soon be kicking in.
"May 3, rehearsals will begin for Godspell, which opens May 28. February 17 is Ash Wednesday, when rehearsals begin for Easter, opening April 4. So it seems meet, right and salutary that we should prepare the way of the Lord. This being (ostensibly) "A Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew," that's where I'll begin...."
Just me meandering my way through Matthew's gospel, and wherever else the script of GODSPELL decides to take me. Should end around the time GODSPELL starts up. You'll find it here.

Sam Shepard, Church Drama Veteran

"I just dropped out of nowhere,” Sam Shepard said of his arrival in New York, at nineteen, in the fall of 1963. “It was absolute luck that I happened to be there when the whole Off-Off Broadway movement was starting.” Shepard, a refugee from his father’s farm in California, had spent eight months as an actor travelling the country by bus with a Christian theatre troupe, the Bishop’s Company Repertory Players. Acting had been his ticket to ride; he’d been so scared at his Bishop’s Company audition that he’d recited the stage directions. “I think they hired everybody,” he said. . . .

Jul 15-18: Richard Osler poetry workshop

Upcoming Poetry Writing Retreat
Honeymoon Bay Lodge and Retreat Centre
near Cowichan Lake, Vancouver Island

with
Richard Osler

Jul 15 - 18 (Thu - Sun)

All-in cost:
Double Occupancy $360
Single Occupancy $510

Richard Osler | osler@shaw.ca | 604 836-7875

“Poems are not . . . simply emotions . . . they are experiences. For the sake of a single poem, you must see many cities, many people and things . . . and know the gestures which small flowers make when they open in the morning. You must be able to think back to streets in unknown neighborhoods, to unexpected encounters, and to partings you have long seen coming; to days of childhood whose mystery is still unexplained . . .; to childhood illnesses . . . to mornings by the sea, to the sea itself, to seas, to nights of travel . . . and it is still not enough.”
The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge
in Freedman’s 1996 biography of Rainer Maria Rilke

For the sake of poetry we are asked to go beyond ourselves, beyond what we know and often, beyond how we see the world. At its best poetry changes us - both when we read it and when we write it. Come and experience this first hand with Richard Osler in the spectacular setting of the Honeymoon Bay Lodge and Retreat Centre on Vancouver Island.

Experience your own surprising words as they appear through "poetic experiements" as the poet Jane Hirschfield calls them. During the retreat there will be five writing sessions. In these sessions you will be encouraged to relax into the sounds and musical language of noted contemporary poets. Then, through carefully chosen "experiments" (assignments) that use powerful examples chosen from poets writing at the top of their craft, you will be invited, and guided, to write your own poems in response. Between sessions there will be ample time for quiet and reflection. Retreatants will be offered also the chance to experience the transforming power of a guided walk through the lodge's labyrinth.

A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 is required to secure a place. WIth the deposit should be a post-dated cheque dated May 31st, 2010 for the balance owing. The amount of the post dated cheque will be refundable if the cancelled space is filled by another retreatant. Cheques should be made payable to Richard Osler and sent to1046 Queens Ave., Victoria, B.C. V8T 1M8. (Soon! We have ten rooms available which means a minimum of about 10 to 12 retreatants.)

"Most people…think that writing means writing down ideas, insights, visions. They feel that they must first have something to say before they can put it on paper. For them writing is little more than recording a pre-existent thought. But with this approach true writing is impossible. Writing is a process in which we discover what lives in us. The writing itself reveals what is alive…The deepest satisfaction of writing is precisely that it opens up new spaces within us of which we were not aware before we started to write. To write is to embark on a journey whose final destination we do not know. Thus, writing requires a real act of trust. We have to say to ourselves, ‘I do not yet know what I carry in my heart, but I trust that it will emerge as I write.’ Writing is like giving away the few loaves and fishes one has, trusting that they will multiply in the giving. Once we dare “to give” away on paper the few thoughts that come to us, we start discovering how much is hidden underneath…and gradually come in touch with our own riches.”

Luci Shaw | Harvesting Fog

Soul Foodie Luci Shaw has a new poetry collection that's just come out, called "Harvesting Fog":
"In arid coastal areas of South America, locals hang rags outside until they're saturated with fog. They wring out this water, all year long, as a means of survival. They call it 'harvesting fog.' And that is a lot like writing poems."
Hope it's got the one about the village in France with all the stone, and martyrs' blood. And the one about the couple and death. . .

And until you get yourself a copy, you can bide your time with these pieces of Luci's from the Oblations blog; Walls, On Retreat, December, Madonna and Child with Saints, Act Now To Avoid Prize Entry Forfeiture, and a new one, No, I'm Not Hildegarde. Oh, and this - Garrison Keillor reading one of Luci's funnest poems aloud: Pink

PASSION PROJECT | Audience / Critic Response

Closes Saturday Feb 6

"Pacific Theatre has never looked so cool. . . . There was a sense – for me at least – that this was a thought-through environment. Nothing felt haphazard, from the way a small hook hung off the structure, to the way the frames were lined up on the floor. . . . Farrington has given time to this work and the sense of living with this project is self-evident as soon as you walk onto the floor. . . . There is a final, and perhaps unintended, layer at work with this presentation. Although I’m not sure how interested Farrington is in the original story of Joan of Arc and the relationship between her passion and that of Christ’s, the work was brought to Vancouver by Ron Reed of Pacific Theatre...(which) frequently programs work that explores issues of spirituality and belief. Just as I think this is a work that will speak to an audience versed in the visual arts; I also think it is a work that will resonate with those immersed in Christianity and its imagery. Easily the most striking moment of the evening (and the most theatrical) is when Nicoll gathers all the screens together into a column, securing them with ropes. It echoes Joan’s experience of being prepared for the fire that will consume her body (and by using the frames further echoes the experience that Dreyer had with the prints of his original film going up in flames). It is hard to escape this resonance of a martyr’s death in a Christian theatre that is itself in the basement of a church: a church which, no doubt, contains images of Christ’s own passion." Andrew Templeton, Plank

"Passionate About The Passion Project
"I’m not sure what happened. . . . I was interested, then intrigued, then involved, then absorbed. At some point, my eyes filled with tears. When it was over, I didn’t want to move. Or talk. . . . The show is called The Passion Project and it is a marvel of interdisciplinary genius. . . ."
Angela Konrad, Irresistable Theatre

"Thank you so much for bringing that show to Vancouver. It was exhilarating and inspirational. . . . It defied description because it is so many things. A rare gem." Stefan Wrenshall, filmmaker

"Astonishing and powerful . . . an emotional experience to rival the film It is dark and tragic but also ecstatic, something like martyrdom I suppose. . . . If you’re interested in performance, film history or anything that pushes boundaries, then see this show." Geist Magazine

"I imagine every person who goes to see this performance installation will have a different interpretation. That is the beauty of art." - Sabrina Evertt, An Unidentified Production

"It's beauty is unmistakable." - Gayvancouver.net

Musician Call! I WAS MEANT FOR THE STAGE

Ron and the apprentices are hard at work prepping our upcoming second stage production I WAS MEANT FOR THE STAGE, and among the preparations is a call for musicians! Below is Joel's plea for a drummer, horn player, and bassist. Know anyone?
Hey all,

My next involvement at Pacific Theatre has me wondering if you have the names of any drummers for us. Well actually, we could benefit from the following:
-drums (small and simple. a hand drum for one piece would be niece too)
-a horn player... of some variety...
-bass (elec or stand-up)

I'm planning to post this at a music school or two, but if you have ideas, do tell.
Thanks and regards,

Joel

Feb 5: The Sermon On The Mount - Live! | Craig Erickson

Craig Erickson (second from left) in Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (Blackbird Theatre)

Craig Erickson & The Sermon On The Mount
Integration Forum, Trinity Western University, Freedom Hall
Friday February 5, noon to 1pm

Professional actor and TWU alumnus and faculty member, Craig Erickson, will share with us his performance of "The Sermon On The Mount," and reflect on his experience of presenting this "simple but powerful" piece in various contexts: its strange evolution, and the effect its "strong counter-cultural ideas" have had on him as an artist and a Christian.

Craig and TWU Theatre have been friends for a long time. He was in many productions while an English major here, including playing Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons. After completing an MFA at Southern Methodist University, he worked in New York, Stratford and the Shaw Festival before moving back home to Vancouver. Three times nominated for the Jessie Richardson award, his work here has included The Furniture of Heaven, God's Man In Texas and Grace at Pacific Theatre, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolfe and Peer Gynt at Blackbird Theatre, Julius Caesar (Mad Duck Equity Co-op), and numerous roles at Bard On The Beach. Craig is an adjunct faculty member in the Theatre Department.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Especially our beloved FPSPA (SAMC!!) colleagues.
